Kennywood: Around the Corner and Out of This World
KENNYWOOD’S OPEN! In Pittsburgh, these two words have marked the start of summer for over a century. The amusement park, located in West Mifflin, first opened as a trolley park but was soon purchased and flipped into the fun-filled park we know and love. The park is home to many types of entertainment including thrill rides, water rides, and classic rides. The park also has theaters, and a “Kiddie Land” for the youngsters.
Did you know Kennywood holds some of the oldest roller coasters in the world? The Jack Rabbit, Racer, and Thunderbolt, have been up and running in the park dating all the way back to 1920, 1927, and 1968 respectively. These wooden coasters provide that nostalgic, old-time feel but are just as thrilling as the latest models. In addition, the park has other exciting, more modern coasters including the Phantom’s Revenge, Sky Rocket, and Exterminator, all sure to make your hair rise.
Not only does this Pittsburgh amusement park maintain impressive attractions, it has some great places to grab a bite! Many Pittsburgh natives head over to Kennywood in order to eat at at the Potato Patch. Be sure to get yourself the infamous fresh-cut fries topped with melted cheddar cheese and crisp bacon bits. If you aren’t already convinced, Food Network ranked Potato Patch fries as top ten best fries in America! The line may be intimidating but it is well worth it. Pro tip: Small Fry located in lost Kennywood serves Potato Patch fries as well.
After indulging in a delicious meal, take some time to check out the more peaceful rides. Jump on in a boat and head into Garfield’s 3-D Nightmare or ride in a cart through the Ghostwood Estate to capture as many ghosts with your laser gun as possible!
